Range Shopping Guide

Picking the right range

For every day chefs, baking connoisseurs, and even those of us who can’t boil water, choosing the right range is still an important decision. There are two main factors to consider: the type of oven and the stovetop. Whether you’re cooking for the whole neighborhood or just you, we’ve got you covered. Let our range shopping guide help you make the right decision for your lifestyle and budget.

Choosing the right type

Standard

With heating elements located at the top and bottom of the oven, standard ovens are reliable for your every day cooking needs. These types of ranges operate with bottom-up heat transfer to ensure your food is cooked to perfection.

Convection

Convection ranges are similar to standard ranges, but have one different feature: a fan, which blows heated air throughout the space. The heat distribution helps maintain an even bake all-around.

How to pick the right top

Self-cleaning ovens

Self-cleaning ovens remove food and grease with the touch of a button. Here's what you should know before you buy:

  • When using a self-cleaning oven, make sure you have enough time before you need to use your oven again; it takes about 4-6 hours to clean itself.
  • Make sure you're home while your oven is cleaning, because it shouldn't be left alone during the cleaning process.

Manual cleaning ovens

Good old-fashioned manual cleaning can be done quickly and efficiently with water, vinegar and baking soda.

  • Just mix all three ingredients in an oven-safe pan.
  • Place the pan inside your oven, and turn your oven to 100 degrees for 45 minutes. That helps soften all the grit and grime.
  • Once the time is up, simply remove the pan, wait for the oven to cool, and wipe out the excess food and grease.

Steam cleaning ovens

Ovens that steam clean are great for quick cleaning of minor food spills at a lower temperature than the self-cleaning feature.

  • Simply pour one cup of water into the bottom of a cool oven, close the door and hit the steam clean button.
  • The process lasts about 30 minutes and softens the grime in your oven
